Earlier this year I was looking for a domestic coverstitch machine to sew swimwear elastic into dance leotards.
For those that don't know a coverstitch is the stitch used on professional garments which creates two lines of parallel stitching on one side and a zigzag stitch on the underside.
So, I decided to try Bernina's L220 Coverstitch which was released earlier this year(2014). I don't remember exactly how much it cost but I think it was somewhere in the region of £600 - not the most expensive on the market but not the cheapest either.
Here's a picture of what it looks like from the front:
It also came with these additional accessories:
x1 dust cover, x1 accessories bag, x1 needle set, x4 spool caps, net, hexagonal screwdriver, lint brush, oiler and tweezers and electronic foot.
It also came with a free instructional book. Although threading it might seem a daunting task at first glance, the instructions are easy to follow and even as a beginner to sewing and without the help of an expert I was able to set it up by myself.
It comes with all the usual features like stitch length adjustment, differential feed and tension dials for adjusting tension. It also has the capacity to use one, two or three different needles at the same time allowing for three different stitches; chain stitch(one row of stitches), double(or standard) coverstitch and triple coverstitch.
I have previously owned a coverstitich machine made by a different brand which I had a great deal of trouble with as it continually made skipped stitches even after adjusting thread tensions, adjusting the presser foot tension and changing the needles.
However, with the Bernina L220 Coverstitch I have had no problems at all with skipped stitches and I am even able to sew over multiple layers of elastic with ease. Therefore, I am extremely impressed by this machine as I have found it to be very well made and reliable and would like to give it a 10/10 - definitely worth the money!
Please note: I am in no way affiliated with the company 'Bernina' this is simply my honest, personal opinion of one of its products.
